Why do pugs have short snouts

Long noses have long been desirable for working dogs because long-nosed dogs have a heightened sense of smell up to million scent-receptors as opposed to just 5 million in us humans. Short-snouted, dogs like Pugs have been bred with flat faces. Pugs have an inferior sense of smell and their flat noses have been known to cause health complications in the breed. Brachycephalic is the scientific term for short-snouted dogs like pugs. Brachycephalic breeds are defined by a characteristically flattened muzzle and elongated bottom jaw.

These features are widely considered to be cute, but the Brachycephalic anatomy poses no physical advantages. Enamored with their cute appearances, more and more people want short-snouted dogs.

Demand for Pugs, Shih Tzus, and the like, is skyrocketing. To meet this demand, breeders continue to promote this breeding standard. Selective breeding is a type of controlled breeding program. In other words, humans worked out a way to remove undesirable characteristics and replicate desirable traits.

For this purpose, selective breeding is highly effective. However, just like any form of inbreeding, it is also linked to increased health problems in subsequent generations. As a result animals with this genetic mutation are more likely to be brachycephalic. The original purpose of Pugs was to serve as lapdogs for Chinese emperors. This is why Pugs don't need as much exercise as other breeds.

Pugs have wrinkled faces because Chinese breeders purposely bred them that way. The most popular theory about the breed's name is that it came from marmoset monkeys , which were also known as Pug monkeys.

Marmosets were popular pets in the early s, and their faces look very similar to the faces of Pug dogs. The first Prince William of Orange led the Dutch in a successful revolt against the Spaniards in the s. Spanish soldiers attempted to assassinate William in Hermingny in , but William's Pug, Pompey, thwarted the attempt. The assassins attempted to sneak up to Prince William's tent, but Pompey heard them and began barking. Because of Pompey's heroism, the Pug became the official breed of the House of Orange.

Napoleon's wife, Josephine, had a loyal and protective pet Pug named Fortune. When Josephine was in prison during the Reign of Terror, before she and Napoleon were married, Fortune carried messages from the prison to Josephine's first husband.

Fortune is most famous for biting Napoleon on the couple's wedding night, after Josephine refused to exile her beloved dog from the marriage bed.
