But that flint of possibility was doused on the morning of the season opener when it was announced he's on the team's injured non-roster list. Pittsburgh opened the season with a win over the Lightning and an overtime loss to the Panthers. On Saturday, the club played in the home opener — against ex-buddy Marc-Andre Fleury and the Blackhawks — without their captain again.

Guentzel's availability is not yet known for Thursday's game against the Florida Panthers , but Crosby is not expected to play. Neither was designated for non-contact. However, Crosby and Guentzel skated as extras when the Penguins took line rushes, and neither practiced with the power-play units. The captain's potential return for a long homestand could save the Penguins on and off the ice.
This year's Penguins are projected to be a playoff team, but injuries and decline are keeping them from being the juggernaut they once were.
